Those yielding unknown as truth values. On the other hand, our system should be able to tolerate local inconsistencies. Thus, we follow the idea of 25 of viewing rules as conditional facts, not as implication formulas. Let us consider a simple rule like p 6-- q. Concerning our model-theoretic semantics, we first have to decide when we consider this rule to be applicable: Whenever q E M or only if q E M A (-,q) ~ M? Since we do not want to draw any more inferences from an inconsistent antecedent, we decide that the rule should only be applied in the latter case.
In this paper, we present the hypermedia retrieval engine HySpirit (Hypermedia System with probabilistic inference for the retrieval of information). HySpirit combines pD with a four-valued logic, thus solving the three problems mentioned in the beginning: pD supports multimedia retrieval by using horn clause predicate logic instead of propositional logic. The four-valued logic solves the problem of retrieval of structured documents and of possible inconsistencies between the contents of document nodes.
