He was especially dissatisfied with young Edgar, whom he called “a slacker” and with whom he dealt not only harshly, but also violently. After the man beat him, Edgar gathered his few belongings and hit the road. He went back to Montgomery and stayed with a relative on Bell Street, sleeping on a couch in the kitchen and paying a dollar a day in rent.
