This is the Massey family tomb, commissioned by Vincent's grandfather, Hart Massey, in 1894. It was designed and built by Edward Lennox, the most prominent contemporary Toronto architect, who was responsible for two enduring city landmarks, the formidable old city hall and Sir Henry Pellatt's vast castle cum residence, Casa Loma. Although the sepulchre dominates the surrounding area, it is, in some respects, reticent and unassertive. It is with some difficulty that one discerns the word 'Massey' on the lintel above the central doorway.

It had been founded in 1874 by Bishop John Heyl Vincent of the Methodist Episcopal Church, a close friend of the Masseys, and a virtual member of the family after his half-sister married Chester in 1886. Chautauqua was conceived as a nondenominational summer program for Sunday School teachers; but it grew into a centre for extended programs and the idea spread into other places, Chautauqua becoming a movement as well as a place. It had, of course, a stout religious core, but it welcomed an alliance with music, literature, and, in a general inspirational way, with science.

The Methodists were still a small sect in the United States but they were expanding rapidly, and no restraints had been imposed 61 The Young Vincent Massey upon them. Methodism in the United States had moved away from the original Wesleyan conservatism - its authoritarian centralism, its loyalty to constituted government. It had become a faith congenial to the frontier, with its emphasis on the individual's power to achieve salvation, its summons to a world of Christian action, its buoyant optimism: the scriptures said 'Let us go on to perfection,' and, to the devout, perfection beckoned as a goal potentially attainable in this world.
