Moore describes the drawing: It is a drawing that is unlike that of any other child in the class: the figure’s arms emerge from its jaws, there is a gap between head and hat, its legs have no discernible feet and the decora- SEMIOTICS AND HERMENEUTICS 25 tion on the figure’s back (not visible from where Nozrul has been sitting) appears on the front. As such it is reminiscent of drawings of much younger children (p. 88). Reflecting upon the drawing and its unusual appearance for a student of Nozrul’s age Moore deliberates whether the drawing should be understood as deficient in motor-coordination or hand-eye coordination skills or even perception, or as a drawing practice that is rooted within a different cultural tradition of visual signification.

However the sign relation is symbolic when we consider the marks that represent the liquid inside the glass and the surface of the liquid in that these marks relate to what might be termed graphic conventions. The refracted line of the table rim as viewed through the glass on the other hand could constitute an indexical sign relation within the drawing, indicating a causal connection. Considered in this way this drawing consists of a series of different semiotic relations as it is produced and functions as a drawing for the child.

In this brief illustration it is possible to see that signs establish and confirm particular meanings and processes of identification and in doing so they create ideas of normality and, by implication, abnormality. It is then possible to ask which identities are sanctioned and legitimated within pedagogic practices and discourses. Barthes’s work on myth and ideology encourages us to recognise the contingent and ideological aspects of meaning and identity that I will develop in Chapters 5 and 6.
